Fiber Tracking Visualization in the Entire Heart.

1. Report

LBL-Report on the Fiber tracking.
Author : Damien Rohmer, Arkadiusz Sitek, Grant T. Gullberg.

Report on the fiber tracking algorithm used in the following movies and pictures. The report also explain the sheet reconstruction.

Movies can be used with authors' permission and proper acknowledgements.

2. Movies

Movies of the Fiber Visualization.
Four movies flying around a fixed image showing the fiber structure in the left and right ventricle.
The first movie illustrates the fiber structure in both right and left ventricle. The camera is rotating around the heart. The reconstruction is performed by performing a seeding (initial position) for the fiber tracking on a cartesian grid and follow the fibers in both direction. The fiber track is stopped if the fiber is long enough or if the path exit the mask of the heart. The reconstruction is performed with 1500 fibers and the movie needed more than 100h of calculation using a Pentium 4 at 3Ghz, 1Gb RAM.
The second movie is the rotation of the entire heart in the perpendicular direction to see the view from the base and the apex. Less fibers are taken in account and some noise is saw in the apex.
The third movie is the rotation of a cut section of the heart. The section is the posterior link between the right and left ventricle. (see last picture: Cut Section of the Heart). A connection is seen between right and left ventricle in the posterior region. A smooth link is also seen in the left ventricle between endocardial posterior fiber and septal wall. However, no apparent connection is seen between right ventricle and septal wall.
The fourth movie is the rotation around the section of the half heart. The mask of the heart is taking in account only the anterior part of the heart.
The movies are encoded using XviD codec and should be DivX compatible.

3. Pictures

Anterior View with Pulmonary Arteria
Two pictures of the anterior view of the right and left ventricle. The Pulmonary Arteria is visible (circular hole in the Right Ventricle).
Posterior View of the Heart Fiber Structure.
Two pictures of the posterior view of the right and left ventricle. The link between the fiber of the right and of the left ventricle is seen.
Top And Bottom View of the Fiber Structure.
Two pictures of the basal view and the view from the apex of the right and left ventricle.
Cut Section of the Heart.
One picture 3481x3016 px (1.5 Mb). View from the base at the center. The blue square defines the section where the fibers are seeded and followed. The eyes symbols represent the position and the direction of the camera. The section at the right is taken from the venter of the left ventricle. The continuity betweene posterior endocardial fibers and septal is obvious. The picture on the top is the view of the posterior wall. The link between right and left ventricle is seen. The picture on the left is taken when the camera is positionned in the middle of the right ventricle. There is no apparent continuity between fiber of the right ventricle and fibers of the septum.
